Echoes of a New Start: ablume on Growth, Music, and Meaning

ablume is a new girl group and re-debut of members Saena, Aran, and Sio (formally of the group Fifty Fifty). Their single “Echo” has been received by fans with lots of love, and the members have expressed eagerness to step into this next phase of their careers.

What does ablume mean?

The name ablume, meaning “blooming anew,” has personal meaning to the girls. “It feels like starting life all over again. Through ablume, I’ve opened not just a new chapter in my musical journey but also in my life as a whole. I truly believe that everything will change depending on how I shape my future from here on out. I’m ready to give it my all to bloom once more,” Aran described.

Saena has a similar sentiment, stating, “The word “again” carries the weight of overcoming something, going through a process, and finally stepping forward with intention. That’s why this time around, we wanted to take that step with more honesty and depth than ever before.” Sio elaborates that she sees “blooming anew” as part of a cycle. “Just because something has withered doesn’t mean it’s over. Sometimes it’s simply the time to prepare to bloom again. In that sense, I fall apart and recover quietly, over and over. Even when the heart feels like it’s faded, it finds a way to bloom again, and someday it’ll fade once more.”

Starting anew

Starting anew in the K-pop industry has many challenges, but the girls conveyed how fulfilling they find their work. Saena emphasized how important teamwork was for the process. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but the moment we shared our hearts and reignited the same passion, the emotion was overwhelming, so deep that words can’t fully describe it.”

Each person expanded on core values they wanted to exude as a group. Aran believes that their core is “empathy” (Aran: We want to speak honestly about emotions that come from within and face them together with our listeners), and Saena and Sio expand on honesty, authenticity, and growth. “Instead of showing a polished or perfect version of ourselves, we want to share who we really are in the moment even if that means being a little unrefined or vulnerable,” Sio explains.

As ablume, the girls are more active in driving their artistic direction. Aran says that they’re more actively involved in meetings and are constantly sharing ideas with each other. Saena agrees, mentioning that “it’s no longer about just delivering what’s given to us. It’s about creating together. That naturally makes us pour more of our hearts into it.”

About “Echo”

Their recent debut single, “Echo,” an emotionally rich debut about enduring love and friendship, and it’s not by accident. “I think “Echo” reflects the story of our past,” Aran admits. “There was a time we were disconnected from our listeners, and I wanted to say over and over again, ‘We’re still connected.’” Saena confessed, “We really wanted this album to tell our story. It was our bond, our love for music, and the unwavering support from our fans that gave us the courage to start again. Since this is the beginning of a new chapter, we wanted to capture the journey we’ve overcome – the brightness and confidence that carried us through, and express it through our music.”

While the trio endured some difficulties with the recording process, Sio found some humor in her experience. ”If I had to share a funny but frustrating story… during recording, it was the change of seasons and my allergies were acting up like crazy. My nose was stuffy, and my voice just didn’t sound the way I wanted. I wanted to capture even the subtlest breath perfectly, but I couldn’t, and it made me feel disappointed. I even felt kind of bad for the team.”

The members of ablume’s voices were distinct in the visuals of the “Echo” music video. In presentation sessions, Saena pitched that the choreography in the final chorus should include the members forming “a shape like a blooming flower.” Sio also wanted to reflect the song’s bright and energetic feel with scenes of them “running through a breezy green field, or laughing together while getting caught in the rain. It was really nice because the company had similar ideas, so everything just came together naturally.

ablume choose favorite lyrics

When asked about a favorite lyric from “Echo,” each girl had the following responses:

  • ARAN: For me, it’s the bridge line: “But now we’ll be together, I don’t mind.” It connects our past and present while also pointing us toward the future. Every time I sing that part, it feels so moving. It really captures the journey we’ve been on.
  • SAENA: The chorus lyric “Wherever you go, I go” hits home for me. It’s something our fans told me often during tough times. “We believe in you. We’ll be with you no matter what you do.” That gave me the courage to move forward again. Now, I want to return that love and support to them.
  • SIO: I’d choose the line right before the bridge: “Oh, with you, feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to.” It’s not easy to feel completely certain that you’re where you’re meant to be in life. But this lyric has a grounding effect. It helps quiet that uncertainty for a moment. That’s why it means a lot to me.

An overwhelming response

The girls have been overwhelmed by the fan responses to their debut single. For Aran, it is the reaction videos that are especially memorable. “They were so fun! I still look them up from time to time, and I’m always amazed by how deeply people connect with our work.” Saena was also “surprised… in the best way. So many people were genuinely shocked in a good way and said they loved it. That gave me such a boost, and I think it helped me gain a lot more confidence.” Sio found a recent fan signing event unforgettable. “That day, I saw so many familiar faces in the crowd, people who had been with us since the very beginning. Seeing them still there, supporting us, really got to me emotionally.”

The girls have hinted in the interview that they have more in store after “Echo.” Aran teases, “Hmm… you caught that twist at the end of the “Echo” music video, right?”

They hope that through their harmonies they can explore different genres. Also their unique concepts, while staying true to their signature color. In conversation, each person had an idea: Aran with a chic vibe, Saena with jazz and hip-hop, and Sio with hyperpop.

The future

Aran, Saena, and Sio have many ambitions for the future: to be on as many stages as possible, to be healthy while making music, and to see their fans more often. Their message to the fans that have supported them through their new beginning? Sio sums it up eloquently: “Starting over as ablume felt like walking from the very beginning again – both exciting and scary. But thanks to the fans who stood by us and waited without wavering, we chose to move forward instead of being afraid. Thank you for giving us the courage to begin again.”
