[INTERVIEW] VERIVERY Talk Past, Present and Future

The 7-member South Korean boy group, VERIVERY are back with their new digital single, SERIES ‘O’ [ROUND 0 : WHO] which has a total of two tracks “O” and “Our Spring”. The Jellyfish Entertainment boy group include members DONGHEON, HOYOUNG, MINCHAN, GYEHYEON, YEONHO, YONGSEUNG, and KANGMIN.

They sat down to answer questions about how they believe they’ve changed since debut, who they look up to the most and much more.

Please introduce yourselves to the HypnoticAsia readers.

• VERIVERY: HypnoticAsia readers! Let’s Face, Who We Are! Hello, we are VERIVERY.

What do you believe has changed the most since your debut, individually and as a group?

• DONGHEON: I think things such as the way we think about the stage and our attitude towards it have changed a lot. In the past, the thought of ‘let’s not be wrong, let’s show the things we prepared’ was strong, but these days, it seems to be a lot more of thinking ‘Let’s have fun and make happy memories’.
• HOYOUNG: I think all of our members have grown up. Things like gestures and facial expressions on stage have improved.
• MINCHAN: I think I’m a lot more relaxed when I go on stage now. In the past, I was always rushed to find where the camera was, but now I’m used to things enough that I’m able to even try various gestures [on stage].
• GYEHYEON: As time goes by, my thoughts for the members have grown and our teamwork has gotten even better.
• YEONHO: The fact that I know more about myself and love myself more has changed the most.
• YONGSEUNG: Personally, I think I have more freedom to enjoy things now. As a group, I think our trust in each other has definitely grown.
• KANGMIN: I’m thinking a little bit more about the stage. I think the biggest change is that I think about what it looks like from various perspectives.

Out of all of your releases, which is your favorite song and concept?

• DONGHEON: Personally, I watched the ‘Thunder’ stage recently. It’s a tough performance, but I think it’s very intense and charismatic, so I think I’ve come to like it even more these days.
• HOYOUNG: I have a soft spot for ‘Get Away’ the most. It was the first concept that was mature, so it was meaningful for us.
• MINCHAN: The song I am most attached to is ‘So Gravity’. I like the DIY music video we made for this song, and I also like the lyrics.
• GYEHYEON: In terms of having a lot of affection for it, I think it’s the debut song ‘불러줘(Ring Ring Ring)’, but I like the concept of ‘Get Away’ the most.
• YEONHO: ‘잠깐, 봄(Our Spring)’ is the one I am most attached to, but it was very difficult and there was a lot of trial and error when making the song. That’s why I love it even more.
• YONGSEUNG: I cherish ‘Get Away’. I liked the concept as well.
• KANGMIN: I think the new song ‘O’ is the song I am most attached to.

Which artists do you look up to the most?

• HOYOUNG: I first started dreaming of becoming an idol after seeing our seniors EXO, so I would say EXO.
• MINCHAN: The artist I admire the most is our senior Kim Jin-ho. .
• GYEHYEON: I really like and respect Bruno Mars.
• YEONHO: The artist I admire the most is Damien Rice.
• YONGSEUNG: I like Jason Mraz and FKJ.
• KANGMIN: I really admire a lot of artists. Everyone has painted various paths with their own colors, so I want to become an artist like that.

When you aren’t promoting and performing, what do you enjoy doing?

• DONGHEON: The members usually spend time with each other, but we tend to eat, work in the studio, and do the things we want to do in the practice room.
• HOYOUNG: I go to see my family and spend a lot of time with my dog.
• MINCHAN: I usually enjoy my spare time by playing games and watching anime.
• GYEHYEON: I usually lie down and watch a drama or variety show.
• YEONHO: Usually, I watch many dramas and movies, compose a lot, and go for a walk to relax.
• YONGSEUNG: I enjoy watching movies or soccer with the members, as well as cycling or taking a walk.
• KANGMIN: I play games, watch soccer, watch Netflix, exercise… I thought about what I wasn’t doing, but I’m actually doing a lot more different things than I thought.

Is there a genre or concept in which you’ve always wanted to try?

• HOYOUNG: I want to try the bright concept of ‘불러줘(Ring Ring Ring)’ again one more time.
• GYEHYEON: I want to try a band-style song too.
• YEONHO: In the future, I also want to try rock-based songs.
• YONGSEUNG: I also want to try decadent (smooth and sweet) songs.

Do any of the members have an interest in acting in dramas, movies or musicals? If so, what type of role?

• DONGHEON: Everyone would very much like to, but I wonder if we can actually do it well. If given a role, I would like to take on the role of the main character’s spunky friend.
• HOYOUNG: I love to watch, but if I were to take on a role, I would like to try a student role.
• MINCHAN: I am interested in acting, but I also want to try voice acting. I want to play a sub-character in the show.
• GYEHYEON: If I ever get a chance, I’d love to try the role of a villain! I think it will be a very valuable experience.
• YEONHO: I’m very interested in acting in musicals, and if I can, I’d like to try any role.
• YONGSEUNG: We are focusing on group stages and albums right now. But, I wonder who will do it later.
• KANGMIN: I really want to. I want to try being in a drama or a movie. I want to try to play a person with a different personality than me.

If you could collaborate with any artist (K-POP or not), who would it be and why?

• HOYOUNG: I want to try it with our seniors VIXX. If we work together, I think we will learn a lot from our seniors.
• GYEHYEON: I would like to collaborate with Bruno Mars because I really admire Bruno Mars’ musicality.
• YEONHO: I would like to perform or collaborate with the artist I admire the most, Damien Rice.
• KANGMIN: For me it’s Ed Sheeran. I enjoy listening to his songs these days.

Late last year, you embarked on your first U.S. tour. Do you have any fun stories to tell?

• VERIVERY: It was an opportunity to meet directly with fans after such a long time and to communicate with our overseas fans, so the whole process of talking, communicating and enjoying, in one space with VERRER was so much fun.

Tell us more about your documentary “Let’s Face Who We Are”?

• VERIVERY: This documentary follows us on our US tour, and the preparation process until we are on stage from the practice, the trial and error, which are not always beautiful, are all included in it. It contains a lot of our honest sides that we have never shown before, so I hope many people will see and like it.

What can fans expect for this upcoming comeback?

• VERIVERY: Please look forward to our growth and how our storyline in all our contents expands through this album. We hope that you will look forward to the sexy and casual choreography that we have never shown before.

Is this a concept that any of the members are excited about?

• DONGHEON: Personally, I really wanted to do R&B music like this, but I didn’t know it would be the title song. I think the combination [of the music] and dance is really good.
• HOYOUNG: Definitely. I’ve talked about this concept with my choreographer before, and I’m happy we were able to try it.
• MINCHAN: I always look forward to trying new genres. I want to try even more diverse genres in the future.
• GYEHYEON: I both look forward to and get nervous to try new things every time. But, as always, we prepared hard, so I hope you will look forward to it.
• YEONHO: Yes, I’m really excited for it. It’s our first time trying it, so I’m looking forward to meeting a new VERIVERY.
• YONGSEUNG: Yes, this concept is different from the previous concepts, so I am very much excited about it.
• KANGMIN: I’m really excited for this concept!

Is there a song from the album that’s a must listen for fans? Why?

• VERIVERY: Since this album is a digital single album, there are only two songs, so we hope you will listen to both the title song ‘O’ and the B-side track ‘잠깐, 봄(Our Spring)’.

To your fanclub VERRER, is there anything you want to say to them?

• VERIVERY: Dearest VERRERs, thank you for always supporting and waiting for us even during the longest hiatus since our debut. We hope for your health, happiness, and for all your days to be full of only good things. We’ll support and cheer on each individual’s goals for the year as well. VERIVERY is preparing for various activities in 2022, so we hope you all enjoy it. Let’s make many pleasant memories together through all the activities! We love you VERRER❤️
